Due to the broad level of knowledge required in biology, chemistry, and microbiology, these professionals can specialize in several areas, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). MLS degree specialties include immunology (carrying out specimen tests on the human immune system and its reaction to foreign bodies), immunohematology (collecting, classifying, and preparing blood for use in transfusions), medical microbiology (analysis, identification and control of disease causing microorganisms), clinical hematology (generalized analysis of blood and its components to identify blood related pathologies), medical parasitology (the study and identification of parasites causing diseases in various clinical and biological samples), medical virology (the study and identification of viruses of medical importance in tissues and other clinical specimens), histopathology (study and analysis carried out on body tissues to identify all related pathologies) and molecular biology (carrying out protein and nucleic acid tests on samples of cells).

Aspiring medical laboratory scientists can earn a bachelor’s degree in a general or specialized field of science from one of ST Louis university branches.

A bachelor’s degree is typically needed to start in an MLS career, and this means an investment in a four-year bachelor’s of science or MLS degree program. That said, students in some programs may complete a degree part-time or even accelerate their speed of learning for an earlier graduation date.

Medical laboratory science (MLS) strives to maintain a quality education program in order to accomplish the following outcomes;

  1. To provide well trained, competent employees for the clinical and industrial laboratories.
  2. To maintain a source of professionals who can constantly bring new knowledge into the laboratory system. To supply the world with medical laboratory scientist who possess advanced skills
  3. To advance the profession of medical laboratory science by training enterprising and adapted individuals who will take the forefront in the changing the environment of health care especially with respect to diagnosis and disease control.

Programme Structure

The MLS program seeks to instill in each student the ability to;

  1. Have knowledge, skills and professional attitude necessary to accurately and proficiently perform and evaluate clinical laboratory analysis.
  2. Have concern for others which carry with it the responsibility of good patient care and corporation with fellow employers. The desire to strive for new knowledge process and to accept changing trends in the profession.
  3. Accept and accurately execute leadership roles whether in management or education.
  4. Develop interest in the growth and development of medical laboratory sciences as a profession.
  5. Perform effectively in hospital diagnostic services, preventive and public health services, academic and in quality assurance in industries.
  6. Function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health teams in the care of individuals, groups in the community, primary, secondary and tertiary health services.
