OVERVIEW

St LOIUS UNIVERSITY is one of the best universities to establish licensure of dental therapists, with the primary purpose to extend dental health to underserved populations.

 A dental therapist is a licensed oral health professional who practices as part of the dental team to provide educational, clinical and therapeutic patient services. Dental therapists provide basic preventive and restorative treatment to children and adults, and extractions of primary (baby) teeth under the supervision of a dentist. 

Upon successful completion of the course gradates will be able to analyze and determine a patients need from a dental perspective by effectively carrying out both preventive  therapeutic procedures to take care of the need of the community and individuals . They should also demonstrate values and attitudes consistent with high standard of ethical and professional conduct.

Dental therapists work primarily in settings that serve low-income, uninsured and underserved populations or in a dental health professional shortage area.

Programme Structure

  • Student with pass in their ADVANCE LEVEL EXAMINATION issued by the GCE board
  • For the degree the candidate should have pass the HPD/HND, IN DENTAL THERAPY or should have pass the other exams conducted by the boards/ councils/intermediate examinations established by state governments /central governments and recognized as equivalence to a 3 year pre – university examination by the university of Buea and St Louis Higher University Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
  • For those sitting for the Degree they should have pass the HPD examination with no less than 50% aggregate marks in the HPD/HND all the courses.
  • English shall be the medium of instruction and examinations for all courses in the programme. All students shall be tested for language proficiency by the Bamenda linguistic center.
  • Be of age 17 and above of the year of academic admission

Entry Requirement

  • Student with pass in their ADVANCE LEVEL EXAMINATION issued by the GCE board
  • For the degree the student must have taken a three year training course in nursing.
  • Obtain an above 50% pass in either the HPD/HND/DSEP Examination and nursing science or other equivalent exams.
  • You must submit with the administration a document of medical fitness form the authorized government medical officer to effect attesting that the candidate is physically fit to undergo bachelor of nursing sciences course. other documents to be forwarded for admissions wound be specified in the process.
  • Determination
  • English shall be the medium of instruction and examinations for all courses in the programme. All students shall be tested for language proficiency by the Bamenda linguistic center.
  • Be of age 17 and above of the year of academic admission
  • A minimum grade point average o 2.00 on scale of 4.00.
  • Earn credit value of 60.

Career Opportunities

  • You’ll be expected to keep up to date with the latest techniques and developments, including best practice. Your professional development will be identified through performance reviews and will be part of your mandatory requirements for General Dental Council register.
    With experience, you can progress to become a practice manager or move into research. You could move into teaching roles or become an orthodontic therapist.
